How cute are these?

The kids and I just got done making our contribution to the spread at our SuperBowl festivities tomorrow. We made mini 'cheeseburgers'.

The 'buns' are vanilla wafers, there's colored frosting for the cheese/mayo/ketchup or whatever. Use green food-coloring to dye shredded coconut and a small peppermint patty makes a perfect 'patty'. We spread a tiny bit of honey on the top and sprinkled with a few sesame seeds for the piece de resistance. They are fun and easy, they taste great (sugar overload) and the kids couldn't stop saying, "Aren't they adorable?"

Punchin' that clock and other stuff

Today is "Punch the Clock" day. What's the best day you've had this month?
My job as Director of Adult Ministries encompasses so much and working at a church is so dynamic that every day is different. One day we might be loading up the bus with supplies to help out after a blizzard hit the reservation, making sandwiches for a church meal, talking to people who just need someone to listen or setting up everything for a Bible study or workshop.

This past Friday was my favorite so far this month. We have a group of "mature" folks that I help plan an activity for once a month. Last week I set up a tour of our local museum, The Journey, and then a soup and sandwich lunch afterwards. The weather was cold and snowy, but 23 people made it. And when we all sat down to lunch one of the ladies said, "So this is your job? Eating with old people?" And I told her seriously, "This is the BEST part of my job!" How lucky I am.

An afternoon with friends

Yesterday I spent a few hours enjoying time with two of my dearest friends. We were coworkers until our layoff a few years ago and ever since, we've made a point of getting together occasionally for coffee (the vice we all share!). Usually we meet at the Dunn Bros. here in town, but yesterday I invited them over to my place. I made Grandma Buhler's famous Chocolate Chip cookies (they were fantastic--if I say so myself) and Dark Canyon Highlander Grogg coffee (to die for). Luda brought her four year old son and the kids had a grand old time together (no fights, falls or other disasters). It was as close to a perfect afternoon as I've had in a long time. Good friendships should never be taken for granted. And I am so grateful for these girlfriends of mine. Love you, Char and Luda!!

A Musical Genius

Today is Elvis' birthday. Who is your favorite singer who is no longer living?

I've said before that I think Rich Mullins was a musical and lyrical genius. His melodies were hum-able but with complex timings and harmonies. And as far as the lyrics he wrote--in my opinion very few writers can so beautifully weave simple truths about life, love and God using the poetic imagery of the world around us. And being in his words "a good Midwestern boy" he captured the beauty of this part of the country in a way no one else does. Here is part of "Calling Out Your Name" from the album The World as Best as I Can Remember It Volume 1.

Well the moon moved past Nebraska
And spilled laughter on them cold Dakota Hills
And angels danced on Jacob's stairs
Yeah, they danced on Jacob's stairs
There is this silence in the Badlands
And over Kansas the whole universe was stilled
By the whisper of a prayer
The whisper of a prayer

And the single hawk bursts into flight
And in the east the whole horizon is in flames
I feel thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And I hear the prairies calling out Your name

New Year's list

Goals I want to accomplish this year:
  • Learn to knit
  • Read at least 3 "classics"
  • Write and submit 5 pieces of writing
  • Keep a prayer journal
  • Memorize 15 scriptures...and still know them by the end of the year
  • Take a picture every day (I already missed yesterday's but I'll keep trying?
  • Love my family more patiently
  • Make someone smile every day

Reasonable? I guess we'll just have to see....
